Professor Henry Higgins (Harrison) makes a bet that he can take "gutter snipe" Eliza Doolittle (Hepburn) and pass her off as a duchess at an embassy ball, simply by teaching her how to speak proper English.

And along the way, there's plenty of music and dancing. I love this movie!

Favorite song: "I Could Have Danced All Night". It's "loverly".

The Philadelphia Story, 1940

Tracey Lord (Hepburn), the former wife of C.K. Dexter Haven (Grant), is getting married again. But the editor of a tabloid magazine has some dirt on her father, and to protect her high society socialite family from embarrassment and scandal, she very reluctantly agrees to have reporter Mike (James Stewart) and a photographer stay at her home and do a story on her wedding. Dexter shows up, too, to make things interesting, and Mike starts to make her fiance George uncomfortable with his attentions towards her.

This is one of my favorites of all time! Just look at those leads! Cary Grant, Katherine, and Jimmy! They are absolutely wonderful!

FACT: When I write these "reviews", I utilize Imdb (Internet Movie Data Base) and Wikipedia to make things a little more interesting, and also to make sure I get the right information on the director. Usually I know who the stars are, but the director (unless he's Hitch) is often a forgotten name. All that to say, when I looked up George Cukor, the name sounded familiar. And no wonder! First, he also directed "Pat and Mike", which I just reviewed a couple weeks ago; and second, he was the director of "My Fair Lady"!

I swear, kids these days don't even know who these two are! But Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn were once household names, like bacon and eggs.

In this one, their 7th movie together (do stars ever do that anymore? Who makes 7 movies with one person? Ok, probably a lot of stars still do...), Pat (Hepburn) plays an athlete who needs a manager, and that's where Mike (Tracy) comes in. As a story, I didn't really care about it, to be perfectly honest. It was just another sports/slight romance story. The scene on the cover (above) is the best one!

But these actors! Legendary! Brilliant! Hilarious! So great together! I didn't know what to think at first- I believe the first film I saw them in together was "Desk Set", and I was really confused as to why they should like each other at first. They seemed like opposites to me. And maybe they were. But, oh boy, did I ever fall in love with Spencer Tracy! Their chemistry is wonderful to watch!

Want an enjoyable film? This will do just fine. But "Desk Set" is my favorite of theirs so far!

(And by "so far", I mean, of course, that I have not yet seen them all; because they are both dead, unfortunately, so they won't be making any more. Just needed to clear that up.)

Fact: The American Film Institute named Katherine the top female star in the history of American cinema! And Spencer Tracy ranked #9 for men. (Humphrey Bogart got #1.) Pretty cool!
